In the summer of 2023, Netflix introduced a significant change. They decided to end their password-sharing practice. Now, sharing your password with someone outside of your household means you’ll be charged an extra $8 for every person. Interestingly, there are variations based on the plan you’re subscribed to. For instance, those with a standard plan can share with only one external user. In contrast, premium plan subscribers have the liberty to share with up to two external users.
Profile Transfer on Netflix
With this new policy, Netflix introduced another handy feature for its users: Profile Transfer. So, what does this feature offer? It allows users who’ve been removed from a shared Netflix account to easily shift their profiles. This means they can move their profile to a fresh or even a different existing account. The beauty of this is that all their recommendations, saved lists, and various other settings will remain intact.
Enabling the Profile Transfer Feature
Let’s delve into how you can enable this feature. On a computer, start by accessing Netflix through a web browser. Next, open the profile you intend to transfer. As you hover over the profile icon located at the top right, a dropdown will appear. From this menu, select “Transfer Profile.” Finally, by clicking on the “Allow” button, you’ve started the process.
For mobile users, the process is just as straightforward. Launch the Netflix app and pick your profile. By tapping on the profile icon (again, top right), you’ll find an “Account” option in the dropdown. At the bottom of this section, you’ll see “Turn on profile transfers.” Once redirected to the transfer page, tap “Allow.” Typically, an on-screen notification will pop up, signaling that you’ve activated the profile transfer feature. Sometimes, you might even receive a confirming email, making the process faster.
Transferring Your Profile to Another Account
Once you’ve enabled the feature, accessing the “Transfer Profile” page in the settings is your next step. What happens in this transfer? Essentially, all your recommendations, viewing history, saved shows, settings, and even your “My List” will move to another account. As a safety measure, Netflix will also keep a backup of the original profile.
Initiating the transfer is simple. Click “Start Profile Transfer.” Then, you have a decision to make: are you transferring to a brand new account or an already existing one?
For a brand-new account:
- Provide the new account’s credentials.
- An email verification follows, after which you can finalize the new account setup. Immediately after, the profile transfers.
For transferring to an existing account:
- Enter the login details of the desired account.
- Upon completion, both the original and the new/existing account holders receive notifications.
Should you find yourself logged out at any point during the transfer, don’t fret. Just log back in and select “Finish Transfer” to resume where you left off.
